Choosing a pendant light: 7 details to check.

A short checklist to help you choose the right pendant light before you order: size, bulb, ceiling height, cord, weight, voltage and material.

Materials, swatches and a tape measure laid out for choosing a light

1. Size against the surface below

Compare the shade width with the table, island or nightstand it will hang over. As a guide, shades under 13 cm look best in pairs or trios, while shades from 15 cm upwards can hang alone. Our pendant height and spacing guide has the numbers.

2. Bulb and lamp holder

Check the product page for the lamp holder (for example E27 or G9) and whether a bulb is included. A warm-white LED around 2700K suits travertine and natural materials best.

3. Ceiling height and hanging height

Over a table or island, the bottom of the shade usually sits 76–91 cm (30–36 in) above the surface. In walkways, keep at least 2.1 m (7 ft) of clearance below the light.

4. Cord length

Measure from the ceiling to where you want the bottom of the shade to sit. Your electrician can shorten the cord during installation. If a cord length isn't listed for your model, email us and we'll confirm it before you order.

5. Weight and ceiling fixing

Stone pendants are heavier than woven ones. Check the weight on the product page and make sure your ceiling point can carry it; your electrician will advise on the right fixing.

6. Voltage for your country

Our lights are made for 220–240 V, as used in Europe, the UK and Australia. If you're in the US or Canada, email us before ordering so we can confirm a 120 V version of your chosen light.

7. Material and wood tone

Travertine gives a focused pool of light and a solid, natural look; woven shades glow and soften a room. Choose a walnut or natural wood tone to sit with your cabinetry, flooring or furniture.

A801 or A809?

Both are travertine pendants with a wood detail on top, but they're different sizes. The A809 is a slim 6.5 cm capsule that looks best in pairs or trios. The A801 is wider at 12 cm, with a stronger presence over an island or beside a bed.

A801 Travertine Wood Core Pendant Light
12 cm diameter × 17 cm height (4.7 × 6.7 in)
A809 Travertine Capsule Pendant Light
6.5 cm diameter × 16 cm height (2.6 × 6.3 in)
